Extending temporal baseline increases understanding of biodiversity change in European boreal waterbird communities

چکیده

Setting relevant temporal baselines is critical to understanding biodiversity change and the full impact of various pressures on biodiversity. Current knowledge in European boreal waterbird communities based monitoring other data from last 35 years. However, presumed main drivers changes these communities, i.e., eutrophication alien predators, started decades before this. We used breeding representing both oligotrophic eutrophic lakes, southern Finland 1951–1970 1996–2015 study against a baseline period when were not yet fully effective. found that species richness increased at lakes but lakes; total abundance turn former lake type decreased latter. Breeding numbers many historically abundant declined such degree increases sufficient compensate for declines. Population prevailed slight declines some previously less species, compensated for. The level results revealed local abundances different likely are affected by drivers, suggesting we need an autecological approach conservation management communities. Increased predation risk rather than appeared be stressor studied. • Historical provide new information Biodiversity depends type. Total abundance, richness, has lakes. Both have Main over-eutrophication.

Biodiversity Increases the Productivity and Stability of Phytoplankton Communities

Global biodiversity losses provide an immediate impetus to elucidate the relationships between biodiversity, productivity and stability. In this study, we quantified the effects of species richness and species combination on the productivity and stability of phytoplankton communities subject to predation by a single rotifer species. We also tested one mechanism of the insurance hypothesis: whet...

Change Detection in Boreal Forests Using Bi-Temporal Aerial Photographs

Increased need for timely forest information is leading to continuous updating of stand databases. In continuous updating, stand attributes are estimated in the field after an operation and stored in databases. To find the changes caused by operations and forest damage, a semi-automatic method based on bi-temporal aerial photographs was developed. The test data were classified into three classe...

Conservation implications of flooding rice fields on winter waterbird communities

The effects of flooding harvested rice fields on waterbird communities were studied during winter. Variation in the number of waterbird species, overall densities of all waterbirds, wading birds, waterfowl, and shorebirds, and a measure of conservation value that weighted species according to their relative abundance and population trends were examined. Each variable was tested for differences ...

Quantifying temporal change in biodiversity: challenges and opportunities

Growing concern about biodiversity loss underscores the need to quantify and understand temporal change. Here, we review the opportunities presented by biodiversity time series, and address three related issues: (i) recognizing the characteristics of temporal data; (ii) selecting appropriate statistical procedures for analysing temporal data; and (iii) inferring and forecasting biodiversity cha...
